WESTERN GOLF AND COUNTRY CLUB
SUMMER AQUATIC PROGRAMS:
For over 50 years an extensive aquatic program has been a part of the total
club experience at Western. By operating programs like these, it
demonstrates Western's commitment to making the Club a place for the entire
family. The three main components of the program are: Open Swimming,
Swimming Instruction, and the WGCC Swim Team. The pool opens on Memorial
Day weekend, and closes on Labor Day.
THE FACILITY and OPEN SWIMMING:
Western's pool is a six lane, 25-meter long structure, with a shallow area
for young swimmers. There is also a separate baby pool with a fountain.
Lounges, tables, chairs, and umbrellas are provided for the comfort of
members and their guests. During all open swim hours the Club provides
lifeguards to ensure the safety of those using the pool. The premises also
include a bathhouse with showers and lockers, and a pool office where
members can get towels and sign in their guests for the day. The immediate
area also includes a playscape for children to play, a small basketball
court, and a grass play area. At the end of the building, the pool snack
bar services members who wish to eat in swim attire.
Pool hours for open swimming are 12:00 PM - 7:00 PM daily, and 12:00 - 9:00
PM on Fridays. Friday night is often referred to as "Family Night" and
occasionally there is a theme, with entertainment and a special menu. The
pool area is closed to the membership on Mondays.
SWIMMING INSTRUCTION:
Bob Crosby, Pool Director and Swim Coach since 1976, and Whitney
Wasielewski, Assistant Pool Director and Assistant Coach, organize the
instructional program. Each year a flyer is sent out to the membership
outlining lesson fees for the year, as well as classes that are offered. We
try to accommodate all levels from beginners to those wishing instruction
in competitive strokes. For more information about instruction, call the
pool office at 313-538-4360, or contact Coach Bob at home 734-425-8953.
WESTERN SWIM TEAM:
The Western Swim Team begins on Memorial Day weekend and concludes at the
end of July. Western competes in the Michigan Inter-Club Swim Association.
This is the oldest summer swim league in the country. The league is
composed of 14 clubs, which are divided into 2 divisions for dual meet
competition. The season concludes with all 14 clubs coming together for the
MICSA Championships during the last full weekend in July. Western is
currently in the Blue Division (Top 7) after its 4th Place finish in 2005.
Swimmers compete against their own sex by age groups. The age groups are 8 & under, 9-10, 11-12, 13-14, and 15-17. There are six dual meets (Western
vs. another club) each summer. After each contest, parents and swimmers
have a meal at the host club and then finish off the evening with a dance.
The swim team is a great way for your children to improve their swimming
skills as well as meet new people and make friends. All interested
youngsters are invited to try the team. No previous experience is
necessary! In fact, many kids who end up as serious club, high school, and
collegiate swimmers get their start at this level. You can contact Coach
Bob at the numbers listed above for more information.
